Notability – Note Taking App Reviews

Does not support iOS multitasking

This app is a disappointment on the 12.9" iPad Pro. It doesnt support any of the multitasking features. The UI is just scaled up to take up the full screen space. Its been ten months since the introduction of multitasking and over two years since the introduction of auto layout with size classes.

Amazing iPad Pro add!

This is hands down the best iPad Pro app you will use for taking notes. I use this everyday in school for note taking and studying. I truly love this app and hope that they keep it going with updates and features. It is perfect.

Greatest productivity app!!

I love this app and especially the fact that you can literally write on anything! Its made me so productive. There is only one complain I have which is that after long periods of writing with the Apple Pencil on the 12.9 iPad Pro, it starts to get weird with the palm rejection. Almost every other time I lay my hand, itll zoom into the page and once the pencil hits the screen itll zoom out, I guess since it noticed that thats not what I wanted to do. Its quite frustrating. I found a quick fix which is to turn palm rejection on and off but I still would like it if it didnt happen. This only occurs after long periods of time writing on the screen, before that it wouldnt give me a problem.

Awesome app, still room for improvements

I am a chemistry student that has been running the notability app on several iPad generations. Currently I have an iPad Air 2 and the app works great with spilt screen, along with other features of iOS 9. I do plan on getting the iPad Pro due to the added benefit of using the Apple Pencil since drawing molecular compounds can be difficult with a standard stylus. I will say that I would love to see improvements on the zoom feature on notability as that would make drawing and handwritten note taking a lot neater. Also would like some natural looking paper backgrounds like grid paper for instance, oh and a ruler to draw straight lines that works with finger gestures would be fantastic! Please add that in developers!! Other than that, a near perfect app! Going to get it for my cousin when she starts school!

Massive battery drain

Importing files using iTunes is a bit glitchy (often doesnt work), and there is a major battery drain associated with this app, but other than that, I love it. This makes college much easier. I dont have to use pen and paper anymore, and I can record lectures while taking notes in the same place. When playing back, the notes are dimmed, and become full color as the lecture (audio recording) progresses. To work around the iTunes import issue, Im having to upload all of my files to Dropbox, and them import them to Notability through there. To work around the battery drain, well, I dont know. It lasts through two classes (about 3 - 3.5 hours) and then I need a recharge. Not running anything else, so I have isolated the problem to Notability.

Best note taking app in the App Store

I have tried so many note taking apps since I bought my original iPad that I have lost count. I have tried them with and without a stylus. Each had their merits but all left me feeling as if they were lacking in one area or another whether they were paid or free. When I purchased an iPad Pro 9.7 with an Apple Pencil I looked for a note taking app again. I was hesitant to buy yet another paid app figuring I would be disappointed. The reviews, especially those that mentioned the Apple Pencil, convinced me to give me to give this one a try. One try and I was immediately a fan. This app makes all of the others I tried feel dated by comparison. Definitely the definitive note taking app, especially for the iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil. I really like the fact that you can put notes in sections and password protect the individual sections. My only real complaint is after paying $5.99 they want another $1.99 per theme pack. Seems a bit greedy but the other features still make it a 5-star app. Besides, themes are cute but dont really add anything to the app.

In school? You need this

This is a great app! Let me say that again. Great great app. Im using it every day. From the day I download it first time, its my top hits. I paired my iPad with a Pencil and this app saved me from paper altogether. Im in grad school, I take notes at least a few hours every day. Notability, paired with the good habit of always keeping school materials in my iCloud, saved me from ever loosing anything relevant, scrambling to find pen and paper and so on. Because I love this app so much, I wish I could have more control over the features. For example, two main concerns: 1. RULED PAPER - preferably introduce more designs 2. BACKGROUND COLOR - more solid, clean colors.

Needs fixing

Ive been using Notability for almost two years to take notes for school. For my first year, Ive encountered almost no problems. But lately, with every update, theres at least one bug that drives me insane. After the last update, my app freezes when Im taking notes, then crashes and when I reopen Notability, everything that I just did is gone. Also, some of my notes are missing when I open Notability then after a couple minutes, they reappear. Notability is a good note taking app, but these bugs are almost making me go looking for a new app to use.

Stable! Hard Working!

I have tried all sorts of note pads and this one is by far the best. I have used it faithfully for three years. I keep thinking I should see what other apps are out there and waste time and money looking over new apps... But none of them have been able to match the versatility of this great app. Thank you

Best Note Taking App Hands Down

As an engineering student in his senior year, keeping organized notes in an easier to read format is very important. I can easily say that this app meets all my note taking requirements and then some. Being able to look back at lecture material with my audio sync is very helpful for studying for exams. Also, have all the notes share across my Apple devices is great for checking some notes while on the go. The only thing I would like to see added is an on the screen ruler to draw more precisely if necessary. Having a straight edge in the app would lead me to toss all the paper I have sitting around and go to this solely!

The app I use the most on iPad Pro

This is the most important update since it now disables input from fingers while Apple Pencil is present. It’s the best notebook app on the iPad. I use it every day for class, handwritten homework, and any other occasions where handwriting is needed.

Good app that lacks two things

Notability is a good app! However, to be great, it needs to things. 1. Resize and move Handwriting and Photos simultaneously 2. OneDrive for Business support Thats it! Do these two things and you have the best app hands down!

Best app

Ive been looking for the perfect note and organizing app for years and this is it !!! My wait is over!! This is awesome , thanks!!

Best with Apple Pencil and iPad Pro

This is by far the best note taking app for the iPad ever. Period. Couple this with the Apple Pencil and it is so amazing. When it is paired with the pencil, your touch wont draw and it gives perfect palm mute. I do my homework with this, take notes, and even type up discussion boards to keep a copy for myself.

Keeps getting better

Notability continues to listen to their users. I asked about creating the ability to select and define words within the app and they truly delivered. Additionally, I recently got the iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil works great with Notability. I can easily add handwritten notes to my professors lectures and it feels so natural. I look forward to seeing how the Notability team can make it ever better than it is now.

Awesome

My iPad Pro works like it should now

Great update for Apple Pencil!

The lag with the Apple Pencil was driving me crazy! This update fixed it. I could have saved some money if it was updated sooner. I ended up buying Goodnotes which was much better in the lag dept but wasnt nearly as good as in the other areas. What a relief

The best

Ive tried several note taking apps and this ones does it all. Easy to create and organize folders and notes. You can write notes or type notes, use post it style, write in different fonts, color, and sizes. You can import photos. I write my own knitting patterns and modify published patterns and this app does everything I need.

Good,but with problems

Notability is a great app to do work and upload pictures. I like all the stuff that notability has to offer, but sometimes its a little glitchy and when its glitchy, its hard to work on.

Simple, easy path to organization

I never picked up the Evernote habit. It may be that Im too disorganized to even start becoming organized. But when Gruber recommended Notability, I jumped on it and found it so easy and so natural that it didnt feel like work. In a meeting, I can snap a photo of the whiteboard. When working on a show, I can record snippets of songs. And I love being able to sketch on an imported document. This is now my primary note-taking app.
